For the Karstenians, bloodsport is a way of life. Whether it be a hard-won triumph on the battlefield, the august inauguration of a new consul, or a fiery eruption of the blue crystal volcano—all serve as cause for riotous festivities and tournaments across the provinces.

Picture the Cauldron, the capital’s largest arena: gladiators from near and far locked in brutal combat, blood splattering across the dark brown earth. Many collapse to the roars of the crowd, to be carried off through the Gate of Death. But some—those few—carve their way through dozens of matches, reshaping their wretched fate with each swing.

Waheela was one such fighter. Hailing from the borderlands, he was originally a member of the Ursus Guard Legion. During the counteroffensive at the mountain pass, his unit broke through Karstenian lines, but was ambushed during the retreat and he fell into enemy hands. Having both legs amputated due to severe injuries, he spent the next five years toiling in the hellish volcanic mining camps, relying on a worn and battered exoskeleton to work. By then, his compatriots seemed to have forgotten him, and he eventually had no choice but to assimilate into this foreign land.

During a mining accident, his unusual strength caught the attention of his overseer. After making quick work of several gladiator hopefuls, he earned the nobles’ favor, who commissioned for him a custom suit of battle armor modeled after those of Centaur Knights. Weighing over half a ton, it could morph into an ultra-fast cycle form mid-charge, making Waheela all but unstoppable.

From the provinces to the capital, the renown of this foreign-born slave-warrior steadily grew. By the time he stepped into the Cauldron, no opponent—be they foreign mercenaries, frenzied berserkers, or even former brothers-in-arms—could stand a chance. One by one, they fell to his blade, and Waheela walked victoriously through the Gate of Life, severed heads rolling in his wake.
